Summary:

My wife recently turned me onto a movie called The Secret, a inspirational self-help film that can dramatically change your life by realizing your dreams. I share my deep thoughts on my experience about this film and how it can impact our lives.

The SecretLast week my wife Jenny told me she wanted to watch a movie with me that was on YouTube called The Secret. She said pull it up on the big screen TV. I thought, a YouTube video, this should be quick, I pulled it up on the TV through our Apple TV. At the time I wasn’t expecting to watch a 90 minute movie, I was busy selfishly entertaining myself with Borderlands 2. So I was a little grumpy when I learned it was a 90 minute movie. However my attitude quickly changed once I realized the importance of this film.

Turns it out was not a normal movie, but instead like an inspirational self-help documentary film. One with a very powerful message about the law of attraction in our universe. The film will empower us to live the life we want, when we learn to apply this secret it will dramatically influence us to change our lives to live our dreams, you just need to take the necessary steps to make it part of your everyday life.

I highly recommend taking the time to watch this on a big screen and uninterrupted. Include family and friends as this is a positive experience for everyone. Then when your done, make an effort to watch it again, and again. Not right away, but a few days later… trust me, once the ideas have a chance to marinate in our minds, we’ll want to go back and watch it again with a new perspective.

Your dreams can be a reality and your life will change forever when you apply The Secret.

Watch The Secret

NOTE: It appears that YouTube has removed the full movie and it is no longer available. You can stream it from Netflix or Amazon Video on Demand. I was able to find a copy online here.

As I was watching The Secret I realized that I already knew this information, we all know it. We are all empowered to achieve the lives we want through our vision, will power, and actions to accomplish them. Yet some how this knowledge, and more importantly, the vision and feelings become suppressed over the years as we grow up and settle into the dogmas of society.

What Happened To Our Dreams?

We all have dreams of the lives we want to live. Unfortunately for most of us, the lives we are living today, are not the lives we dreamed of in our younger days. We always want something better for ourselves and our loved ones. It’s not just financial either, good health, great relationships, and family are just as important in our lives. Being financially independent is no good if you’re all alone in the world, part of the dream is to share the journey of life together with someone you love.

Sharing life with loved ones and being at peace with ourselves brings us happiness.

As children we dream of our future, we see it, then we go out and get it. We don’t understand the concept of not being able to achieve what we want, we just know that we can do it and we set out to achieve our vision. We start with lots of education through schools and then getting a job or starting our own business. Through this process of growing up from child to young adult we fall into the trappings of society and become conditioned to simply fit in and be a part of it. The next thing you know your going through the motions of life without any real direction because it is what everyone else is doing or what someone else told you.

We begin to make a change to our dreams. We actually start to sacrifice the scope and scale of our dreams and adjust them to our current situation. Realizing the our day job will not provide the true dream, so instead we make new smaller dreams that satisfy us to be contempt with the lives we are living. This is wrong.

We fall into the trappings of dogma, living by what society tells us to do.

Some people do actually achieve their dreams, they ignore what others tell them and instead they follow their heart and mind, visualizing their dreams into reality. While many others get stuck into the mentality that working for others is the way to live our lives. Progressing through the corporate ladders and moving our way up to earn more money while we work our asses off…or for some, not working very hard at all. This path rarely allows us to fulfill our dreams.

There is nothing wrong with working for other people, however it rarely provides us with the means to truly achieve our dreams. The fact that we adjust our lives to our situation instead of taking the actionable steps to pursue our dreams is completely wrong, we should never sacrifice what we truly desire in life. We need to listen to our heart and mind and make the life we want.

I’m not saying that we don’t achieve great things, we do, I’ve accomplished a lot in my life. I have a home and amazing wife, I’ve traveled throughout a good part of the world and I live my life with no regrets. However I realized from watching this film that I’ve held myself back. I have done exactly as described above. Without even realizing it, the ability to realize and bring my dreams to life had become suppressed and I’ve simply thought I was doing well, but in reality I’ve been going through the motions.

What Are Our Dreams?

We all have many dreams, however I feel that these are the core things that we want in our lives for us and our loved ones.

  • Happiness
  • Good health
  • Strong loving relationship
  • Family
  • Travel the world
  • Living, experiencing, and appreciating life
  • Financial independence
  • Being able to have the things you want

Re-Awakening

After watching this film I realized that I’ve always known this information and the power to do what we want. It’s just a matter of reactivating it and applying it to our everyday lives. The more we ask and visualize what we want in life, the more we will attract it and have it bought into our lives. It is our choice.

As the film shows, it is true that we attract what we think. If someone always has negative thoughts and are negative in life, then their lives tend to be filled with constant negativity. Yet if you have a positive outlook and energy in your life, then your life tends to be filled with positivity. It all depends on our outlook on life and what is in our minds, the things we are constantly thinking are the things that we attract.

It is also important to realize what is happening subconsciously, this applies to the thoughts we don’t focus on, yet occur in the back of our mind. Your going to get something regardless if you consciously want it or not. This is why it is important to clear your mind, free your self of thoughts, be still within….then focus only on the thoughts you really want to have.

The choice is ours, we simply have to consciously make the decision and act upon it.

Ask And You Shall Receive

In the film there are three key things you need to master in order to realize your dreams. Simple things that need to be constantly persistent in our minds daily…every day we should be focused on our dream.

Ask

Know what you want in your mind and then ask for it. This is essential, don’t just think “oh I want to be rich”, instead really think about what you want in life, focus on it, focus really hard so you have a clear picture of it. Now ask for it. Just think it in your mind and ask for the things you want.

Visualize

This almost has to come first before you can ask, but once you know what you want, you need to constantly visualize it in your mind. Act like you already have it in your life, every day. Don’t just visualize it for one hour and then forget about it, if you really want it then you need to constantly visualize it in your mind every day to achieve it.

Receive

The last part, just as with visualizing it, you need to open your self to receive it. Don’t let anything distract you from acknowledging that you will undoubtedly receive that which you ask for in you mind.

Make the change in your heart, mind, and soul to go after your dreams.

Be persistent about having what you want in your mind all the time. Write it down, print it out, use pictures, make it the last thing you see before going to bed and the first thing you see when you wake up. Do what ever it takes to stick to your vision and always be taking steps to reach them. In time it will become second nature, but the first month you start this change will be a challenge to apply it daily.

Living in Gratitude

The other key element in the film was about being grateful. It is vital to your mental health to always be grateful for what you have. Your health, roof over your head, food on the table, loved ones, family and more. Never disrespect life, embrace it and appreciate it. Give back in life to those you love and those you come in contact with, regardless of what other people think, and remember to never be judgmental.

The Optimist’s Creed

The following is a creed from the book, a creed that we should follow to mentally change our way of thinking if we are truly are determined to dramatically improve our way of living life for the better. I’ve believed and lived in the buddhist way of life for most of my adult life. There are many mantras from buddhism that overlap with this creed that help us be better people to ourselves, our loved ones, and everyone we come in contact with. It is how our outlook on life should be lived.

The Optimist's Creed

I promise myself

  • To be so strong that nothing can disturb my peace of mind.
  • To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person I meet.
  • To make all my friends feel that there is something worthwhile in them.
  • To look at the sunny side of everything and make my optimism come true.
  • To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.
  • To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as I am about my own.
  • To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
  • To wear a cheerful expression at all times and give a smile to every living creature I meet.
  • To give so much time to improving myself that I have no time to criticize others.
  • To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
  • To think well of myself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud words, but in great deeds.
  • To live in the faith that the whole world is on my side, so long as I am true to the best that is in me.

Whatever it is you are feeling, is a perfect reflection of what is in the process of becoming.

Visionary Quotes Of Truth

Steve Jobs“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
—Steve Jobs

That mantra alone should inspire us all to follow our inner voice and pursue our dreams regardless of what else is going on around our lives. Never stop believing in your own heart, follow it endlessly with the right vision and you will achieve your dreams.

There are several fantastic quotes from the film, here are a few of my favorite ones:

  • “You create your own universe as you go along.”
    — Winston Churchill
  • “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
    — Martin Luther King Jr.
  • “All that we know is the result of what we have thought.”
    — Buddha
  • “Imagination is everything it is a preview of life’s coming attractions.”
    — Albert Einstein
  • “What ever the mind of man can conceive, it can achieve.”
    — W Clement Stone
  • “What you resist, persists.”
    — Carl Jung
  • “All power is from within and is therefore under our own control.”
    — Robert Collier
  • “What ever you think you can or can’t, either way you are right.”
    — Henry Ford
  • “Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors for you.”
    — Joseph Cambell
  • “If you can dream it, you can do it!”
    — Walt Disney

Summary

After watching this film a few times I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting upon my life and the dreams of the life I want to live. Since then I’ve had a more clear vision in my mind of what I want. I’ve even had a some exhilarating visions and feeling of actually believing I already have it. It is really rewarding and now I am trying to change my life to incorporate this secret and apply it to my everyday life.

My dreams feel very big and at times overwhelming. My next step to help clearly visualize my dreams is to write them all down, draw and map them out. Then I can ask for it, visualize it, and receive it. Attracting my dream and taking steps to achieve it. I’ll be posting my visualization in the near future.

When you have an inspired thought, you have to trust it and act upon it.
