Weekend Running

This past weekend we attended two running race events, back-to-back on Saturday and Sunday. At first I wasn’t sure if I could handle two races in a row, but now that I’ve completed both I can say that I’m glad we did it, we had a lot of fun. Even though I’m sore this morning it was a good challenge to push my body further into better shape and it made for a great experience.

Spring is officially here today and it’s already showing itself off in our garden. Our fruit trees are starting to get their first flowers which will eventually turn into fruit. Here are two photos from our trees, the first is from our purple cherry plum tree that eventually has those deep purple leaves with lots of little plums that are the size of a cherry, they are very sweet.

Beets are one of those rare root vegetables that people either love or hate. I’m one of those that love beets, I’ll take them anyway I can get them, canned, boiled, roasted, fried, pickled, and definitely juiced. I always pick up fresh beets at the local farmers market, usually both red and gold beets. My favorite ways of consuming the beet roots are roasted or juiced, the top greens I usually sauté with garlic, herbs, and wine as a side dish or mixed into a another dish such as a quiche in place of chard. Here is my recipe for delicious roasted beets that makes for an excellent side dish to any meal.

This past week I discovered music artist Other Lives from a Facebook ad. Strange, as I’m not one to click on ads, but this one mentioned something about how Radiohead loves Other Lives so much that they have them as their opening act on our current Radiohead tour. As a fan of Radiohead I figured why not, I’ll check it out.

Grilled fruit often comes as a surprise to many people, but it’s usually quite delicious. Adding some simple seasonings or marinade before grilling it will often enhance the fruit, bringing out the natural flavors to make for a wonderful side dish or a delightful desert. Grilled pineapple is one that works exceptionally well to enhance your grilled meals. Every time I grill now I have to include this grilled pineapple recipe, it’s so yummy!

Several years ago we were wine tasting in Sonoma County some good friends. One winery, I can’t remember which one, had all these classic cars parked out front for a small car show. One of them was a red 1965 Mustang Fastback.

A few months ago we started watching the TV series Lost. We never watched it when it was on TV, we usually prefer to watch shows once they are available on DVD or Netflix, that way we can enjoy them without the commercials and frequently in bursts several episodes at a time. Last night we finally finished the last season of Lost.
